A certificate of analysis is a PDF. That is the whole problem. It carries the visual authority of a laboratory document while being, mechanically, a file that anyone can open in an editor and change.
The peptide market runs on these documents, which means there is a strong incentive to produce one whether or not a test happened. What follows are the checks that catch most of it. None of them requires any chemistry.
Start here, because it ends a surprising number of enquiries. "Third-party tested" with no laboratory named is not a test result. A genuine report identifies who performed the analysis, usually in the header, with contact details. If the name is missing, there is nothing to verify and nothing to check against.
Where a name is given, look it up independently — not through the seller's link. A real analytical laboratory has a website that predates the peptide brand citing it, a physical address, a price list and other customers. A handful of operations in this market have built laboratory-shaped websites specifically to be cited by the brands that own them.
The strongest check available to you. Serious laboratories issue results with a reference number that resolves on the laboratory's own system. If the only copy of a result is a PDF on the seller's website, you are trusting a document held by the party it flatters. Ask whether the result can be viewed on the lab's system. A supplier with a real result answers instantly, because it costs them nothing.
A result describes one batch of one product. Without a lot number it cannot be attached to anything, which makes it useful for exactly as long as nobody asks. Check that the lot on the report matches the lot printed on the vial you were sent. A mismatch is not an administrative slip — it means the document is about a different batch.
Covered at length elsewhere, but it belongs on this list. Purity is a ratio; content is a quantity. A report quoting 99% purity with no milligram figure has told you the composition was right and said nothing about how much you got. This is not necessarily forgery, but it is the most common way a real document is used to imply more than it says.
Fakes are usually edits of real reports. Look for mixed fonts, text that sits slightly off the baseline of the rows around it, numbers in a different weight to their labels, a chromatogram image at a different resolution to the page, or a trace whose peaks do not correspond to the figures in the table. Check the dates: a report issued before the batch was made, or a test date that falls on the day the product launched, is worth a question.
Run your eye across a seller's whole set of results. Real analysis produces variation — some batches come back at 98.2%, some at 99.6%, occasionally something fails and is withdrawn. A catalogue where every compound returns a near-identical headline number has not been tested; it has been branded. Genuine testing programmes publish the disappointing ones too, because withholding them defeats the object.
One question that does most of the work
"Can I see this result on the laboratory's own system?" A supplier with a real independent result answers in a sentence. Anything else — a re-sent PDF, an explanation about confidentiality, a change of subject — is the answer.

And the check we would fail: most of our catalogue is currently running on the supplier's certificate rather than an independent result. The ledger marks that per lot rather than letting one good result stand in for the range. We would rather you knew that from us than worked it out afterwards.
